PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image compressor employing wavelet transform, which can reduce the arithmetic quantity. SOLUTION: A two-dimensional image signal element block 10 separates a received two-dimensional image signal into GR, GB, R and B signals and supplied them to a one-dimensional multi-band filter block 20. The one- dimensional multi-band filter block 20 applies wavelet transform in a horizontal direction to the GR, GB, R and B signals supplied from the two-dimensional image signal element block 10 respectively and supplies the transformed signals to a small coded block 30. The small coded block 30 applies Huffman coding to each of the image signals supplied from the one-dimensional multi-band filter block 20, applies run length conversion to the Huffman coded signals and provides an output.
