PURPOSE: An automobile number plate recognition method is provided to recognize license numbers of a number plate by using a characteristic pattern and a normalized feature of a number plate, expressed in a corresponding image. CONSTITUTION: A system senses an entry of an automobile into a set area(S210), takes an image of the automobile via a camera(S220), preprocesses the taken image(S230), extracts the number plate area from the preprocessed image(S240), normalizes the size of the number plate area image(S250). The normalized number plate area is converted into a binary image in which symbols and characters are separated from a background(S260). The separated symbols and characters are compared with references stored at a database(S270). Then, the system determines the numbers and characters in the number plate of an entering automobile with the reference characters and numbers having the highest similarity(S280).
