PURPOSE: A light source for a projector and a projection type image display apparatus using the light source are provided to greatly increase the luminance effectively obtained from a lamp and obtain high precision and excellent workability. CONSTITUTION: A light source for a projector comprises a light-emitting tube(6) to emit light and a reflecting mirror holding the light-emitting tube and having a concave reflection surface to reflect the light from the light-emitting tube and keep the reflected light in an optic axis direction. The mirror has a first reflector(7a) allocated near the holding portion holding the light-emitting tube, a second reflector(7b) allocated outside the holding portion and which contains material different from the first member. Furthermore, the first reflector contains the material of heat-resistant glass, and the second reflector is formed by heat-resistant organic material, which has a lower heat deformation temperature than a heat deflection temperature of the heat-resistant glass.
