PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To eliminate noises while avoiding a decrease in resolution. SOLUTION: A predetermined number of calculating directions and a plurality of direction identification numbers are set according to whether or not a pixel of interest being processed is located at (or near) a predetermined end of an image expressed by image data. For each of the set direction identification numbers, the level value of each of four pixels including the corresponding pixel of interest is multiplied by a corresponding coefficient and the total of the multiplication results is calculated as a central value. From the plurality of calculated central values corresponding to the respective direction identification numbers, the central value closest to the level value of the pixel of interest is selected to replace the level value of the pixel of interest. The above processes are performed on all the pixels of the image expressed by the image data.
