PURPOSE: Superconducting synchronous electrical machines, a method for cooling the same and a method for shaping air gap between a rotor and a stator are provided to cool effectively the stator and achieve a separate stator cooling system. CONSTITUTION: A synchronous machine(50) comprises a rotor(54) coupled to a rotor cooling system, an annular stator(52) around the rotor and having radial cooling passages, and an annular gap(57) between the rotor and the stator. The annular gap has a variable thickness along a length of the gap, and a stator ventilation system(82) provides cooling gases through the annular gap and the cooling passages in the stator.
