A one-part hair dye composition of an air-oxidation type which comprises A 5,6-dihydroxyindoline-2-carboxylic acid or a salt thereof, B an alkali agent selected from among sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, ammonia, guanidine, basic amino acids, carbonate salts and C 10 to 50 wt% of a water-compatible organic solvent and which is substantially free from alkanolamine and has a pH of 8 to 12. The hair dye composition exhibits an excellent dyeing power.
