PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that prevents the surface of a charging roller from being excessively worn or damaged, sufficiently cleans the surface of the charging roller, and prevents deterioration of image quality resulting from charging failure and ununiform charging, by controlling cleaning conditions for the surface of the charging roller in accordance with image forming conditions which determine the degree to which the surface of the charging roller is soiled with toner, added agent, etc. SOLUTION: In the image forming apparatus having a charging member for charging the surface of an image carrier while rotating in contact with the surface of the image carrier and a separable/contactable cleaning member for cleaning the surface of the charging member, a control means is provided for controlling so that the rotating speed of the charging member during a cleaning operation differs from that used in an image forming operation.
