PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a piston assembly of a free piston internal combustion engine. SOLUTION: The free piston internal combustion engine suitable for the use inside a vehicle has a combustion cylinder and the piston assembly. The piston assembly comprises a piston and a plunger shaft. The piston can reciprocate inside the combustion cylinder. The piston comprises a crown part, a skirt part extending from the crown part with a piston ring groove inside, a hub attached to the plunger shaft, and at least one support block. Each support block is located adjacent to the crown part, extending from the hub to the skirt part. A cut-out part is set between each support block, the skirt part and the piston ring groove. The cut-out part provides the mechanical support for the piston during acceleration and the effective heat transfer for cooling the piston ring groove as well.
