PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device for relieving two-way thrust caused by 'a walk phenomenon' generated in a work, that is, movement of the work in the axial direction caused after start of rolling of the work in a screw, a helical gear, or a worm. SOLUTION: The work retainer includes a 1st thrust-generating part 1 for pushing the work tail with a center 6, a 2nd thrust-generating part 2 for pushing the center 6 and the 1st thrust part 1 together to the work 5, and a means for moving and positioning the whole of the 1st and the 2nd parts in the axial direction of the work 5, and a 3rd thrust-generating part for pushing the center 6 to the work. The work is retained between the center 6 urged to the work by the parts 1, 2 and a center-receiving center 7 urged to the work by the part 3, and in that state the form-rolling is performed by working a rolling tool 9. Each thrust in the 1st, the 2nd, and the 3rd parts 1, 2, 3 is smaller than that generated in the work 5, in the order of the 2nd > the 3rd > the 1st.
