PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the damage of a display decal by avoiding the interference of the white sheet of an original pressing cover member with a scale after the edge of the white sheet is made to satisfactory approach the scale so that the edge of an original may be covered. SOLUTION: This image reader is equipped with the scale 9 obtained by sticking the display decal 13 where display showing the size of the original is applied to the surface of a scale main body 11 arranged along the edge of an original platen 8, and the display decal 13 is stuck to the base of a recessed part 12 formed on the surface of the scale main body 1. Consequently, even when the area of the white sheet 7 is made large enough to cover the edge of the original and the edge of the white sheet 7 is made to approach the scale 9, the white sheet 7 interferes with the scale main body 11 but it does not interfere with the display decal 13 when the original pressing cover member 3 is made to rise and tilt. Therefore, the damage of the display decal 13 is prevented.
