PURPOSE: A device and a method for hot swap are provided to protect an internal element in a board from a threshold current when the board is inserted or removed from a system, and to apply the power to the board by receiving an enable signal from a CPU only when the power applied to the board is stabilized. CONSTITUTION: The device comprises a microprocessor(200), a current detector(210), a hot swap controller(220), a bus switch(230), connectors(240-C1,240-C2), a control part(250), a display(260) and a switch(SW). If the board is inserted, the switch(SW) generates a signal corresponding to the board insertion and offers it to the CPU of the system and the control part(250) of the board. The signal corresponding to the board insertion is applied to the CPU and the control part(250) in order to generate a power on signal of the CPU. The CPU confirms that the board is inserted and waited, and makes the board receive the power by generating a CPU enable signal. The hot swap controller(220) applies the power to the board if the control part(250) generates the enable signal, and plays a role of limiting the threshold current.
