PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the possibility of occurrence of errors due to change of interlayer distance or a wobble of a disk, and to perform smoothly a layer jump motion. SOLUTION: A device is provided for controlling a layer jump motion on an optical drive. The layer jump motion includes a kick motion, a holding motion, a brake motion and a standby motion. A layer jump controller has a lens, and a voice coil motor. It includes a pickup head which moves vertically the lens by driving the voice coil motor with a driving force, a preamp which generates a focus error signal, a controller which receives the focus error signal and generates a focus control signal, a low-pass filter which receives the focus control signal and generates an interlayer distance balance signal, and a drive unit to output the driving force.
