PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium in which the thermal instability is improved and the decrease in the output is prevented, in which the magnetic coupling between magnetic layers provided on up and down sides of a nonmagnetic coupling layer is stronger, and which has a higher coercive force and a lower noise. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium consisting of at least a nonmagnetic substrate, a nonmagnetic under layer, the magnetic layers, and a protective film, it is solved by the magnetic recording medium having at least one nonmagnetic coupling layer on the nonmagnetic under layer and having the structure in which the magnetic layers are provided on up and down sides of the nonmagnetic coupling layer, in which the first magnetic layer from the side of the nonmagnetic substrate is one selected from a CoRu based alloy, a CoRe based alloy, a CoIr based alloy, and a CoOs based alloy.
