PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling driving motor of looper is provided to improve threadability of the front end part of rolling strip by controlling driving of the looper positioned between stands in hot finishing mill, and a method for controlling the driving motor of looper is provided. CONSTITUTION: In an apparatus(100) for controlling a driving motor(16) for starting a looper(10) in which the looper is positioned between a plurality of stands to control tension between the stands by supporting a rolling strip(2) that is rolled as it passing through the stands(1,1'), the apparatus for controlling the driving motor of the looper comprises a computer(20) for outputting set values of target angle (&thgr;), Young's modulus, looper moment of inertia and starting current for the looper; data collection part(30) for collecting data by actually measuring angle of the looper and thickness and width of the rolling strip if a certain period of time passes after the rolling strip advances into a stand(1') positioned in rear of the looper; a starting current output part(40) for outputting the starting current supplied to the driving motor of the looper; a base current operation part(50) for operating a base current supplied following the starting current; a base current compensation value operation part(54) for operating compensation value of the base current from the initial time point of the base current to stabilized time point; and a motor driving part(56) for driving the driving motor by receiving the starting current outputted from an output part of the starting current and compensated base current outputted from the base current compensation value operation part.
