PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface light emitting device without degrading characteristics even if it is used for a long time. SOLUTION: This surface light emitting device is provided with an electroluminescent element 6 with a positive electrode 5, an organic light emitting layer 3 and a negative electrode 1 formed on the back face of a transparent substrate 8 and has a light emitting surface on the positive electrode 5 side. An ultraviolet-ray cut-off layer 7 is formed on the transparent substrate 8. A structure having the transparent substrate 8 formed of a sheet of a cycloolefin polymer and the cut-off layer 7 formed of titanium oxide is cited as an example. The cut-off layer 7 may be formed on the front face side or the back face side of the transparent substrate 8.
