<p>A device (14, 20, 22) for forming a cellular network is provided. The device comprises a substrate (2). A plurality of hydrophilic sites (16) are provided on the substrate (2) for occupation by cells (32). A plurality of hydrophi1ic tracks (10) are provided on the substrate (2) for guiding formation of cell connections between sites (16). Also provided are a plurality of hydrophilic regions (6A). The hydrophilic sites (16) and hydrophilic tracks (10) are recessed between the hydrophobic regions (6A). The hydropi1ic sites (16) and/or hydrophilic tracks (10) may be provided with a guidance cue (24) for guiding formation of the cellular network. Preferably the guidance cue (24) is a chemical guidance cue (24), such as an extracellular matrix (ECM) protein. An example of an ECM protein is laminin. The device (14, 10, 22) may be used for forming a cellular network of neurons.</p> |
