The engine has an electrical machine acting as a crankshaft starter generator. A further electrically powered starter motor is provided for starting the engine. The crankshaft starter-generator's rotor is connected to the engine's crankshaft and its stator to the engine housing. The rotor has an additional gear rim or similar for coupling an additional machine to the electrical machine, i.e. an especially electrically powered starter motor. The engine has an electrical machine acting as a crankshaft starter generator that can be used to start the engine and to generate electrical energy when the engine is running. A further electrically powered starter motor is provided for starting the engine. The crankshaft starter-generator's rotor (1) is connected to the engine's crankshaft and its stator to the engine housing. The rotor has an additional gear rim (4a-4d) or similar for coupling an additional machine to the electrical machine, i.e. an especially electrically powered starter motor.
