PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a composite material with an arbitrary coefficient of thermal expansion. SOLUTION: This manufacturing method comprises charging a mixture of an oxide having a negative coefficient of thermal expansion, which is expressed by a chemical formula (A1- ZDZ)(W1- XRX)2 O8 , (wherein A is Zr, Hf or mixtures thereof; D is at least one element selected from elements which can be dissolved in ZrO2 or HfO2 ; Z is a value of a maximum dissolving atom ratio or less (including zero), which is limited by each element; R is at least one element selected from elements capable of being dissolved in WO3 ; and X is a value of a maximum dissolving atom ratio or less (including zero), which is limited by each element), and one or more metals, into a mold, pressurizing and sintering it with heat generated in the mixture by passing electric current through the above mold and the mixture. The sintering operation is performed at 777 deg.C or lower with a heating rate of 20-1,000 deg.C/min, under a pressure of 0.1-1,000 MPa. |
