PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a headlamp for an automobile which secures visibility of the front of a vehicle by lighting a high beam and forms appropriate light distribution which does not become glare light for an oncoming car in case a low beam cannot be turned on. SOLUTION: The headlamp is provided with means 21a, 23 for illuminating a low beam, means 31a, 33 for illuminating a high beam and a means 50 for switching light distribution which switches the low beam and the high beam. The headlamp is provided with the means 50 for detecting malfunction (a circuit for switching light distribution) which detects an abnormal situation that an appropriate low beam cannot be formed and a means 40 for inclining an optical axis which inclines at least the optical axis L31 of the high beam up and down. The headlamp is formed so that, when malfunction is detected by the means 50 for detecting malfunction (a circuit for switching light distribution), the light distribution is switched to the high beam by the circuit 50 for switching light distribution and the optical axis L31 of the high beam is directed downward by the means 40 for inclining the optical axis. When an appropriate low beam cannot be formed, visibility of the front of the vehicle is secured by lighting the high beam which generally has a large light quantity and directing the optical axis L31 of the high beam downward so that it does not become glare light, thus safety driving is made possible. |
