SOLUTION: A partition member 2 is formed in the gap between substrates and the partition member 2 has a first space 2a arranged along a first substrate 1a and a second space 2b arranged along a second substrate 1b with the spaces shifted in the direction A perpendicular to the substrates. The spaces 2a, 2b appear as tightly adjacent to each other without a gap when viewed from the direction A perpendicular to the substrates. The spaces 2a, 2b are filled with an insulating liquid 3 or electrophoretic particles 4 to constitute pixels. Since the pixels appear as tightly arranged without a gap, the definition can be increased and the contrast can be increased.
