Sausage skins are extruded from an annular nozzle comprising a fixed outer casing the first part of which is cylindrical and the second part is conical, and a rotating core the first part of which is cylindrical and the second part is a conical conveyor worm, whereby the fibrous mass of animal material being extruded is forced through a cylindrical chamber consisting of a fixed outer casing and rotating core and is finally extruded through a fixed annular slit nozzle. The rotation of the core is stated to rearrange the direction of the fibres to produce a skin of improved strength. A suitable nozzle, <PICT:0756109/IV(a)/1> Fig. 2, comprises an outer casing 1 terminating in a cylindrical portion c, and a core support 3 which carries a rotatable member 4 comprising a toothed wheel 5, conical worm thread g for feeding the material from hopper 6 and cylindrical portion h. The rotating portion h of the core is followed by a fixed cylindrical portion mounted on the end of core support 3. The length of the cylindrical rotating portion h of the core is preferably approximately equal to the diameter of the extrusion orifice. In order to produce skins of different thicknesses, detachable liners may be inserted in the end of the cylindrical portion c of the outer casing. Specification 433,245, is referred to. |
