Pigment composition comprises a dye covalently bound to rare earth metal sulfide particles through a coupling agent. Independent claims are also included for: (1) production of the pigment composition by contacting the sulfide particles with the coupling agent in a liquid medium and reacting the dye with the coupling agent; (2) coloration of plastics, paints, rubber, ceramics, glazes, paper, inks, cosmetics, dyes and multilayer coatings using the pigment composition.
