PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating application type magnetic recording medium which is a magnetic recording medium having excellent electromagnetic conversion characteristics, more particularly a greatly improved error rate in a high- density recording region and is excellent in productivity and travelling durability and which is low in noise and is excellent in electromagnetic conversion characteristics in a recording and reproducing system combined with an MR head and has extremely outstanding durability. SOLUTION: This magnetic recording medium is a magnetic recording medium formed with a magnetic layer mainly composed of ferromagnetic powder and a binder on a base and is used to reproduce recording signals by a magneto- resistive magnetic head (MR head), in which the projections of a height above 30 nm measured by an atomic force microscope (AFM) on the surface of the magnetic layer are <=100 pieces/900μm<2> , the magnetization inversion volume V of the magnetic layer is (0.1 to 5)×10<-17> ml, the coercive force of the magnetic layer is >=2,000 oersteds (159 kA/m), and the base is a polybenzooxazole (PBO) of 0.5 to 4.0 nm in the average center surface roughness (SRa) on the magnetic layer forming surface side. |
