PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extend the life of a light source while uniformizing the illuminance in the main scanning direction. SOLUTION: A light source of an image reader comprises film layers stacked on a transparent substrate in the order of a transparent electrode, a surface light emitter and a metal electrode, and emits light under application of a specific voltage on these two electrodes. A surface light emitter column is configured by arranging surface light emitters corresponding to each color of R, G and B in the subscanning direction, or by arranging monochromatic surface light emitters repeatedly in the main scanning direction. Accordingly, even when the light source has a defect where the film thickness is thin, only a small current concentrates at this point with low resistance, and film burning on this spot does not occur.
