The yarn feeder, consisting of a cylindrical cup (8) associated with a return roller or guide (9) to provide a half-turn of the yarn, and a heater to maintain the cup at a set temperature, has the cup and return guide made with spaced grooves (8a, 9a) perpendicular to their generating surfaces to enhance the twist rise communicated by the cup spindle and to prevent any overlapping of yarn spirals. The lower surfaces of the grooves can be rounded, made with a surface state or treated to facilitate the twist rise, and the diameters of the curved groove surfaces have at least two alternating different values. All or some of the grooves can be eccentric relative to the axes of the cup or roller. The temperature of the cup is generally between 55 and 130 deg C or between 130 and 240 deg C, depending on the type of polymer.
