PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a styrene-based composite material excellent in rigidity in which a layered compound is uniformly dispersed and to provide a method for producing the composite material. SOLUTION: This styrene-based composite material comprises (A) a resin composition composed of (A-1) an atactic polystyrene having one or more kinds of structural units represented by the general formula (1) [wherein R<1> may be same or different and represents at least one among hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, a 1-4C hydrocarbon group or oxygen atom, nitrogen atom and silicon atom; m is an integer of 0-5] or the atactic polystyrene and rubber-like elastomer and (A-2) a syndiotactic polystyrene having one or more kinds of structural units represented by the general formula (1) and (B) 0.1-30 wt.% layered compound which is released and dispersed.
