PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a refrigerating apparatus having a refrigerating circuit provided with an expanding machine, which enables a smooth refrigerating cycle under any operation condition. SOLUTION: The refrigerating circuit (10) of the refrigerating apparatus is filled with carbon dioxide as a refrigerant. In this refrigerating apparatus, a high pressure of the refrigerating cycle is set to a critical pressure or more of carbon dioxide. The refrigerating circuit (10) has the expansion machine (22) and a motor-operated expansion valve (23) serially provided therewith. The refrigerating circuit (10) is also provided with a by-pass pipe passage (35) for bypassing the expansion machine (22) and the motor-operated expansion valve (23). The bypass passage (35) is provided with a bypass valve (36). A compressor (21) and the expansion machine (23) are configured by a fluid machine with a constant displacement and directly connected to each other with a single shaft.
