The invention relates to a method for controlling transmission power in a communications system, comprising the steps of receiving a signal (S1) in a receiver instructing a transmitter to increase or decrease the transmission power by a power control step. The method further comprises the steps of determining statistics of a power distribution of a received signal and controlling the size of said power control step adaptively on the basis of said statistics.
