PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact constant velocity universal joint. SOLUTION: Compact constant velocity universal joints (210 and 210) include an outer joint member (212) and an inner joint member (222), and surfaces (214 and 224) of these members provide a hinge connection of a joint. Grooves (232 and 234) matched to receive a torque transmission ball (236) are formed in these surfaces. In order to retain the ball (236) in the grooves during the operation, a ball retainer (238) is provided adjacent to the ball (236) in the axial direction and adjacent to an open end (216) of the outer joint member (212). The ball retainer (238) is hinge-connected to the outer and inner joint members (212 and 222) around the same point as a center.
