PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a load acting on a control shaft owing to valve spring reaction force or the like from causing an error in the output of a control shaft sensor 14 and resultingly lowering control precision. SOLUTION: A variable lift/operating angle mechanism can continuously vary a lift and operating angle of an intake valve. The variable lift/operating angle mechanism comprises a plurality of links including a rocker arm as an intermediate member, and varies in characteristics with a turning angle of the control shaft having a controlling eccentric cam on which the rocker arm is fitted. The turning angle of the control shaft is detected by the control shaft sensor 14 comprising a potentiometer. A turning movement is transmitted by engagement between a pin 84 set on the control shaft and a slit 82 in a base plate 83 on the control shaft sensor 14, where the direction of the slit 82 is along a load direction acting on the control shaft at an idle operation to minimize an error due to a load F.
