The display device has a character display element (2) illuminated from within by a lighting device (4), with a magnetic fixing (5) used for securing the character display element to an automobile roof (6). A rechargeable battery (7), contained within the character display element and/or a solar cell device (8) are used for supplying the lighting device and a remote-control receiver (10), receiving a signal from a remote-control transmitter (11,11') for on-off switching of the lighting device.
