<p>A golf club head 10 comprises a first piece 11 forming the striking or face plate 12 and a second piece 13 that preferably forms the back and side walls of the golf club head 10. The striking plate 12 is pre-stressed, preferably by the second piece 13. A third piece 17 may be fixed to the second piece 13 to give additional force to the pre-stress on the face plate 12. The third piece 17 may also act as a weighting element. A hosel member 19 may be provided either internally or externally relative to the second piece 13. The striking plate 12 may have flange members from the top and bottom and/or side edges of the plate (30, 31, 34, 35 Figs 5 to 14) that mate with either slots or formations of the second piece 13 (26, 27, 44, 48 Figs 5 and 13). Fastening may be used to hold the pieces 11 and 13 together. The golf club may be any of a wood, iron or putter and the arrangement gives a "spring-like" effect.</p> |
