Organic waste is gasified or pyrolyzed to produce a synthesis gas which is then contacted at high temperature with a sorbent material comprising iron and the sulfur-free gas is then converted into alcohol. - A method for preparing fuel alcohols comprises the following steps: - (a) gasifying or pyrolyzing organic waste such as solid household refuse or sewage sludge in order to produce synthesis gas; - (b) contacting synthesis gas at 300-800 deg. C with a sorbent material comprising at least 50 wt.% iron in order to produce a sulfur-containing iron compound and a substantially sulfur-free gas; and - (c) converting the purified gas into fuel alcohols. |
