PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively test a loop-back inside a house and to a repetition site when connecting a user LAN to the wide area LAN of the communication trader by an optical fiber transmission line through the repetition site. SOLUTION: When testing the loop-back of first and second repeaters 80 and 90 of an optical converting repeater 60 or repeating device 70 inside the house, an optical converting bridge 50 on the side of a station transmits an initiation packet presenting the initiation of that test. That packet is shorter than the minimum packet length of an Ethernet(R) frame, and further, an identification code is added. Then, the first and second repeaters 80 and 90 discriminate whether the value of the identification code in the initiation packet is addressed to the present device or not. When the value is not addressed to the present device, '1' is subtracted from that value and the packet is transferred. Even when the user LAN is connected through a plurality of repeaters to the wide area LAN, the loop-back between these repeaters can be tested.
