PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a patterned recording medium wherein head adsorption is prevented, the holding capability of lubricant is high, and a surface recessed and projected structure is difficult to be broken, and a recording device. SOLUTION: This recording medium is provided with a recording layer having a plurality of recording track zones 31 including a plurality of rows of subtracks where a plurality of recording cells 29 formed separately from one another are cyclically arrayed along a track direction, and separation areas 32 arranged in both sides of each recording track zone 31 to separate the plurality of recording track zones 31, and a protective layer 30 formed on the separation layer 32. The surface height of the protective layer 30 formed on the separation layer 32 is set equal to/higher than the surface height of the protective layer 30 formed on the recording layer.
