PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out flexible production of the optimum amount meeting market's needs without varying photographic performance even when a charge is varied according to a change of production quantity and to produce a silver halide emulsion having monodispersity with good productivity. SOLUTION: A series of continuous operations are carried out wherein in a first line 12 an aqueous solution of a silver salt, an aqueous solution of a halide salt and an aqueous solution of a hydrophilic dispersion medium are mixed are reacted to form nuclei of silver halide grains and the mother liquor containing the nuclei of silver halide grains is stored in a cooled state until the quantity of the nuclei formed reaches the required quantity of a silver halide emulsion. After satisfying the required quantity, a series of continuous operations are carried out at least once wherein the cooled mother liquor is filtered in a third line 16 to carry out removal of an unnecessary salt generated in the formation reaction and dehydration condensation and the mother liquor after the filtration is continuously and instantaneously mixed with an additive liquid containing ultrafine silver halide grains prepared in a second line 14 to grow the nuclei of silver halide grains.
