PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small optical fixing unit in which the emission range can be switched without using mercury imposing a large environmental load, and a thermal printer comprising it. SOLUTION: As the light source of an optical fixing unit 17, a small planar Braun tube 19 not using mercury is used. At the time of fixing a first recording area 2a, the optical fixing unit 17 alters the emission range in accordance with carriage of a color thermal recording sheet 2 such that only the first recording area 2a is irradiated with UV-rays and a second recording area 2b is not irradiated with UV-rays. Since a shutter for regulating the irradiation range can be eliminated, size of the optical fixing unit and an apparatus using it, e.g. a printer, can be reduced.
