PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive material usable for the reactor for hydrolyzing 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin in the step of producing methionine. SOLUTION: This material of the equipment for the step of producing methionine by hydrolyzing the 5-(2-methylmercaptoethyl)hydantoin in the presence of an alkali at <=160 deg.C is a stainless steel including 19-30 wt.% Cr, 17-22 wt.% Ni and <0.08 wt.% C.
