PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely detect whether a preceding paper sheet is overlapped with a following paper sheet or not during continuously carrying the paper sheet by allowing the correction of an interval between the preceding paper sheet and the following paper sheet. SOLUTION: A timer measures an estimated time period from the detection of the front end of the paper sheet by a feed switch 106 to the passage of the rear end of the paper sheet through a pair of feed rollers 103. If the rear end of the paper sheet is not detected, a feed roller clutch shuts off the transmission of driving force to the pair of feed rollers 103 and sets the driving force to be transmitted to the pair of feed rollers 103 again after the elapse of a preset time. To stop the carriage of the following paper sheet for a certain time produces an increase in interval between the precedingly carried paper sheet and the following paper sheet.
