A fabric web is monitored by a sensor supported on a strip is located within a housing with a transparent panel in direct or indirect contact with the web. The housing is esp. sealed against dust and incorporates a lens or lens system which is positioned above the sensor-strip. The seal is effected by exactly-fitting flat flexible seals or pressure. The lens system consists of a system of rod lenses or a single cylindrical lens. The glass panel is cambered and at least as long as the sensor elements in the housing. The housing has an internal full-length illumination system which is a fluorescent tube or an array of 50 or more light- emitting diodes. The housing also incorporates a sensor data processing unit and a voltage step-down system.
