PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic servo type material testing machine capable of stably controlling, optimizing both command responsiveness and disturbance responsiveness, automatically setting each constant of a feedback loop necessary for optimization. SOLUTION: An adjusting part 52 in the feedback loop is composed of two portions 52a and 52b respectively executing proportional action and derivative action to a desired value input and a detected value. A means is provided for individually applying weight to both portions. A setting means is provided for storing responsiveness when a step input is supplied in an open loop state attached with a test piece TP, identifying a system using stored contents and M(s)=Re<-> LS/sf(s) (f(s) is a non-integral rational function including a time constant T, and L is delay time) used as a model of a loading mechanism including the test piece TP, and retrieving a corresponding combination from combinations of optimum constants regarding a plurality of prestored characteristics and automatically setting the constants.
