PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a unit and a method for arithmetic which can save memory capacity and perform arithmetic operation at a high speed. SOLUTION: The unit has an arithmetic means which performs specific arithmetic operation as to a specific argument and a storage means which stores data to be referred to by the arithmetic means during the operation and when the operation is carried out as to the argument, the arithmetic means expands the argument in a power of 2, represents the operation of the argument by a recurrence formula based on the expansion formula of the power of 2, and performs the operation of the argument by repeated calculation based upon the recurrence formula while referring to reference data stored in the storage means.
