PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a storage system having a scalability which is adaptive to a small-scale to a large-scale configuration with the same high-reliability and high-performance architecture. SOLUTION: Figure shows an example of configuration of a storage system 1, wherein LSW110 is a local switch, GSW115 is a global switch, and 21 is a global shared memory. For example, when a host 3 sends a request to read data out to a disk control cluster 1-1, a channel IF part 11 access a locally shared memory part 22 through LSW110 to read the data out of the locally shared memory or a disk drive 2 when the data are present in the disk control cluster 1-1 and send them to the host, or accesses a global shared memory part 21 when the data are not present in the disk control cluster 1-1 to examine a disk control cluster where the requested data are stored and obtain and send the requested data from the disk control cluster where the requested data are stored to the host.
