The translation tool uses a set of prime phrases, or sequences of words, in the source language, and determination of corresponding phrases in the destination language. Each phrase in the source language has a set of alphabetic characters associated with it to facilitate quick recognition of the phrase in a reference list. Each phrase in the source language has a set of alphabetic characters associated with it, so that the original phrase is replaced by a character code - for example 'en ce moment' becomes 'ECM'. A translation into the destination language is associated with this code and corresponding phrase. This information is held in the form of a reference list, so that frequently occurring phrases in the source language can be translated readily into the destination language. A bi-lingual dictionary is still used for specific words which do not form part of this phrase vocabulary.
