The method involves acquiring an image of the object (2) with an image acquisition device (5) and producing image data, subjecting the data to wavelet transformation and carrying out object monitoring with transformed data. The transformation. is performed using a 2-dimensional 2-channel filter bank whose coefficients are computed on the basis of coefficients of a Mallat signal reconstruction filter bank and of a Mallat signal analysis filter.
