PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an alicyclic tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride which is the starting monomer of a polyimide used for an electronic material, and also obtain the polyimide. SOLUTION: Hexacyclo[6.6.0.1<2> ,<7> .0<3> ,<6> .1<9> ,<14> .0<10> ,<13> ] hexadecane-4,5,11,12- tetracarboxylic acid-4,5:11,12-dianhydride (HHAA) which is represented by the formula (1) (wherein, R and R<1> represents a 1-10C alkyl group; perforated lines represent a single bond or a double bond; m represents an integer), is disclosed, and its intermediate hexacyclo[6.6.0.1<2> ,<7> .0<3> ,<6> .1<9> ,<14> .0<10> ,<13> ] hexadecane-4,11- diene-4,5,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid and hexacyclo[6.6.0.1<2> ,<7> .0<3> ,<6> .1<9> ,<14> .0<10> ,<13> ] hexadecane-4,5,11,12-tetracarboxylic acid, and furthermore a tetraalkyl hexacyclo[6.6.0.1<2> ,<7> .0<3> ,<6> .1<9> ,<14> .0<10> ,<13> ] hexadeca-4,11-diene-4,5,11,12-tetracarboxylate and a tetraalkyl hexacyclo[6.6.0.1<2> ,<7> .0<3> ,<6> .1<9> ,<14> .0<10> ,<13> ] hexadecane-4,5,11,12- tetracarboxylate are disclosed, and also a method for producing the same is disclosed.
