<p> A level detector (10) and method for indexing the slag-metal interface level (34) in a tundish (16) uses an insulating refractory brick (56) having a plurality of embedded conductive wires (54) with exposed ends. The brick (56) is further formed of a non-conductive material, preferably 30-80% lime and 20-50% magnesia. Alternatively, the exposed distal wire ends can be surrounded by a sleeve (88 or 90) of lime-magnesia. The sleeve (90) of lime-magnesia can have an exposed opening having a smooth trumpet shape. Alternatively, the exposed distal wire ends can be encased in closed-one-end tubes (92) formed of thoria, alumina, alumina-graphite, magnesia, magnesia-graphite, zirconia or zirconia-graphite having powdered metal or graphite packed therein.</p> |
