<p>Apparatus (10) and method for sensing and measuring optically active material in a sample (16), comprising: a) a light source (12) emitting light of a wavelength that can pass through the sample; b) a light transparent sample container (16) for holding the sample; c) a linear polarizer (14) interposed between the light source (12) and the sample (16) for producing a polarized light beam; d) a symmetrical linear split-field polarizer (18) fixedly positioned to intercept the polarized light that passed through the sample (16); e) detectors (20) to detect the split light beams passing through each polarizer of the split-field polarizer (18); f) means (22) to amplify the current or voltage passing through each of the detectors; g) a differential amplifier (24); h) a data processor (26); i) a display (28); and j) electronic circuitry to operate the apparatus and provide an output on the display.</p> |
