A transmitter connected to a microprocessor (114) includes a radio frequency oscillator which is tuned to a carrier frequency. A receiver connected to the microprocessor includes a counter (112) to determine an edge count indicating the received signal carrier frequency. The microprocessor, on demand, receives an unknown signal and tunes the transmitter oscillator to a carrier frequency corresponding to the edge count. An Independent claim is also included for method of self-tuning duplicating transceiver.
