PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To actualize a small-sized and low-cost optical member and a lighting device, and an enlargement projection device by improving the light utilization efficiency of the illumination light emitted by a light source. SOLUTION: The optical member and lighting device have the light source 1 which emits the illumination light, a rod type optical element 3 which makes the illumination light uniform, a reflecting surface 2 for the illumination light which has a small- diameter opening that the illumination light passes through on its incidence surface, a reflection type polarized light separating element 5 which is provided on the projection surface of the rod type optical element 3, and a polarized light converting means 4 which converts the polarizing direction of return illumination light at part of the rod type optical element 3. The light source 1 is provided with a converging optical element which makes the illumination light emitted by the light source incident by converging it. Further, another reflection type polarized light separating element may be provided on the projection surface side of the rod type optical element; and further a 2nd rod type optical element is provided closely on the projection surface side of the rod type optical element and a polarized light converting means may be provided at part of the 2nd rod type element.
